Jacquelyn Torres ‘10Ed: Empowered Through Service

April 07, 2010

St. John’s University was a perfect fit for Jacquelyn Torres. Passionate about service, she has steadily engaged in volunteer activities that embody the University’s Catholic, Vincentian and Metropolitan mission.

A Childhood Education major, she has worked tirelessly on behalf of her fellow students as a member of Student Government. She also has been a role model by traveling to New Orleans and restoring homes devastated by Hurricane Katrina. Last year, she served as an orientation coordinator. “The first experience students have of St. John’s is through us,” said Jacquelyn. “They should feel our love for the University.”

Today, as a member of the President’s Society, she is an ambassador for St. John’s, which she views as a wonderful way to give back to the University that has given her so much. “I have received more than just an education. I’m coming out of the experience with much, much more.”

Jackie encourages everyone –– whether it includes studying abroad, leading, serving others — to take advantage of what St. John’s has to offer. “You take that first step and it opens up a whole new world.”
