Memory's Wake is a work of hybrid nonfiction consisting of family
biography, regional history, memoir, photo essay, and staggered
narrative. The book revolves around the author's mother's traumatic
childhood during the 30s and 40s in the Finger Lakes of New York
state, and how that history hibernated in her head until surfacing
forty years later. The manuscript blends her account with General
Sullivan’s genocidal campaign against the Iroquois, the cult of the
Publick Universal Friend, and weird religious visionaries from the
“burnt-over district” of New York, while also offering glimpses
into the author's own childhood.
