Purpose
Interlibrary Loan offers the opportunity of obtaining
academic resources not available in the St. John's
University Libraries. The service is available to all
current St. John's students, faculty, administrators and
staff. To request a book, article, or other material through
Interlibrary Loan, you must provide complete and accurate
bibliographic information. Please see a librarian at the
Reference Desk if you need help finding this information.
Always check the Library Catalogs
and Full
Text eJournals before submitting an interlibrary loan request
to be sure the item is not owned by any of the St. John's
Libraries. Please request
materials from other St. John's campuses at the Circulation Desk;
these are not considered interlibrary loans.

ILLiad (InterLibrary Loan Internet
Accessible Database)
Interlibrary Loan requests may be submitted electronically through
the ILLiad system using the campus links above. The first
time you place a request through ILLiad, you will need to
register. Providing complete and accurate information will
enable us to process your request and contact you promptly when
your materials arrive. During registration, you will choose a
username and password that will identify you for all future ILLiad
transactions, including placing new requests, tracking the status
of requests in progress, asking for renewals, etc. If you forget your password, please
contact the ILL Office for assistance. Please DO NOT register
again.
What may be borrowed
Generally, books and photocopies of articles related to academic
research may be requested. Each lending library has its own
policies regarding loans and copies. Obtaining materials is
dependent upon the good will and cooperation of the participating
libraries.
Most libraries do not lend:
- Reference books
- Audiovisual materials (videocassettes, CDs, DVDs, etc.)
- Rare, fragile, or very valuable items
- Full issues of periodicals or newspapers
- Very recently published books
- Items owned by the borrowing institution, including those out
on loan
We do not borrow course
textbooks, no exceptions.
Time Involved
Usually, about ten business days are needed from the time of
request until an item is received. If referral to more than
one library is necessary, or if the request information submitted
is inaccurate, the process may take longer.
Loan Periods and Renewals
Loan periods are established by the lending institution;
in general, books are loaned for two to four weeks. You may
request renewals via your ILLiad account. Photocopies are
yours to keep.
Fees
The St. John's Libraries do not charge you for Interlibrary Loan
services, but you may be responsible for fees imposed by the
lending library. Please indicate on your request the maximum
cost you are willing to pay for the item. We will only borrow
it for up to that cost.
