The St. John’s University Libraries have started to capture
podcasts of programming and events in the Libraries and
collaborating with other departments and offices to capture some
programs and events that offer unique, mission-oriented content,
enliven academic and student-life engagement, and enrich academic
resources. In capturing podcasts, the libraries are taking a
proactive role in forming our digital “information commons," to
include audio technology in the univerisity's quest to promote
information fluency and life-long learning.
The links below represent some samples of our efforts in this
growing program. Please visit this page often for updates! We
welcome feedback on these offerings and look forward to
collaborating with faculty on providing salient and exciting new
resources. To contact us about podcasting, simply email us at eservices@stjohns.edu.
Extra-Curricular and Guest
Lecturers:
Learning cannot be contained in the classroom, but it can be
accessible on the subway or at the gym...podcasts allow community
members to audition some of the unique guest lectures and
university dialogues that St. John's offers. This fall, faculty and
student panelists inaugurated the Provost's "Dialogue on the
Future: Meeting the World’s People" with their panel discussion on
the relationships between
economic development and ecological sustainability, inspired by
the Nobel Peace Prize winner, Dr. Wangari Maathai, and her
"Greenbelt Movement". Other topics range from global to local, from
economic systems to cosmic systems.
Minister Antonio Bandini addresses the role of Italy in World
Diplomacy since the second World War -- while
Dr. James Benson, speaks about the Reallocating Paper Space to
People Space in Academic Libraries (PowerPoint
available).
Mr. Jason DeParle*, senior writer at The New York Times,
reflects on poverty and welfare system while Theoretical Physicist
Dr.
Brian Greene* spoke to St. John’s College Faculty and alumni on
the origins of the “Elegant Universe” and his investigations into
String Theory.
Vincentian Charism:
The Vincentian Center for
Church and Society, in conjunction with the Local
Societies Initiative of the Metanexus Institute, continue to
engage the community through their Rosalie Rendu

scholar of science and religion, shares his insights on the “Role
of Spiritual Transformation in Overcoming World Food and Water
Problems.”
Eileen Claussen addresses "Climate Change and Strategies for
the Global Environment." Student and faculty panelists address the
concerns raised on World
Food Day and
HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, and the Center's Conference on
"Languages for Peace" offers spirited talks, including

his role as an international "peace-maker" and Dr.
Lungching Chiao's reflections on language and cultural
education as a pathways to peace.
Academic Service Learning:
As part of the Vincentian Mission, St. John’s Academic Service
Learning Department pairs students with volunteer opportunities
that allow the student to apply their skills and
course-related-learning to a practical problem. The library offers
podcasts of this year’s Academic Service Learning Essay Contest
winners, as read by the students themselves. Recent winners
include:
Robert J. Ryan, who shares his experiences in a food pantry in
Flatbush, Brooklyn.
Katy Honan,
Valerie Salinas, and
Hannah Spenser, reflect on their work with patients in a
veteran's hospital, a children's ward and a Nursing home,
respectively. Candice
Howard tells us about some of her new acquaintences and
reflects on New York City poverty on the heels of her Midnight
Run.
