Academic Service-Learning Publishing Recognition

The Office of Academic Service-Learning announces a publishing prize for articles written about Academic Service-Learning and published in a referee or peer reviewed journal.  The Academic Service-Learning Program will provide an honorarium of $250 for articles accepted for publication.

Purpose of the Grant
The Academic Service-Learning Publishing Prize is intended to:

  • Promote national awareness of St. John’s commitment to experiential teaching and learning, linking meaningful service to the learning experience.
  • Encourage discussion and development of service as a rigorous and broadening pedagogical tool.
  • Clarify the distinction between “volunteering”, “pre-professional internships”, and service that is integrated with curriculum objectives.

Timeline
All faculty are eligible to apply.   A partial list of appropriate journals is provided below.  Notice of publication should be sent to Stephen C. Bicsko, Vincentian Frs., Academic Service-Learning Faculty Coordinator, in Bent Hall, Garden Level.

Topics to consider:

  • Designing service placements at community agencies that are appropriate to the faculty member’s discipline and address a genuine community need,
  • Incorporating student insight and observations into class times,
  • Developing meaningful opportunities to reflect via relevant written work,  presentations, etc.,
  • Unique experiences of St. John’s University faculty, students, and departments.
