Although the Academic Service-Learning Program only began in
1995, some of the department staff has a long history with St.
John’s University. Ms. Janet E. Mangione has been at SJU for 20
years. She has worked with Administrative Staff in the Higher
Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) as well as an Assistant to the
Academic Program Counselor in HEOP. She then moved into Academic
Service–Learning as Associate Director-a position she presently
holds. In 2004, Ms. Mangione became an adjunct Assistant Professor
in the Core Curriculum.
“I hope to continue to serve the University Community as a
member of the Academic Service-Learning team of administrators as
we provide an important means for faculty members to attain a
well-integrated partnership with students and with community
service sites. Developing and implementing an Academic
Service-Learning Program affords me a unique opportunity to
personally participate in the mission and vision of St. John’s
