Nature and Purpose of Agency:
To serve and organize for better public policies people who are
poor, troubled, weak or oppressed on Long Island, including
immigrants and their families and newly arrived refugees.
Like St. John’s, we are a ministry of the Roman Catholic Church
endeavoring to imbue all that we do with that unique approach and
spirit.
Tasks Available for Students:
Immigration - direct service work as well as social action and
advocacy, within a 21 person team – interviewing, assessment and
intake of clients – counseling (with mentor or supervision) of
clients on immigration law and public benefits – resettlement aid,
ranging from ESL and computer training to general orientation to
life in America for recently arrived refugees.
Business – assist with all business aspects of the Department of
Institutional Advancement.
Time Requirements:
Flexible though an ongoing relationship is desirable and
most beneficial to participants;
Day and evening hours available (Tuesday)
Student Awareness/Special
Instructions:
Direct supervision will be under the Department’s Director and
administrators of the three available units; counseling, refugee
resettlement and advocacy.
