The new fellowship recipients, who will be know as “Global Language Fellows,” must maintain a cumulative index of 3.0, will serve as tutors for students taking language classes, and provide translation and other assistance—in restaurants, bookstores, markets and banks, for example--to their cohorts as needed during their time abroad. Once returned to New York, they will be expected to become involved in recruitment efforts for the Office of Global Studies, and apply for the Global Ambassadors program, spreading the good news about study- abroad programs.

Those who wish to apply for the scholarship must currently be enrolled and have completed a minimum of 30 credits; must participate in a St. John’s-organized global studies program that spends at least five weeks in a city where their major/minor language is dominant; have a cumulative index of 3.0 or higher and 3.2 in their major or minor; and is required to write a 250-word statement explaining how study in the particular country will further his or her academic goals. In addition upon completion of the semester abroad, the student will furnish an essay addressing the impact that studying abroad has had on his or her academic experience.
