Speak Portuguese like a native!
Occupying almost half of South America’s land mass, Brazil
is roughly the size of the continental United States. Brazil also
is a microcosm of the many ethnic, racial and cultural forces that
shape contemporary Latin America. You’ll have ample
opportunities to learn Portuguese through daily interactions with
native speakers. To strengthen your conversational skills, you’ll
have the option of taking basic or advanced language classes at the
Pontificia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (PUC Rio),
Brazil’s leading private university.
Brazilian society reflects the languages and cultures of its
original Portuguese, African and indigenous populations. Also
evident are the influences of later European, Asian and Middle
Eastern immigrants. Nowhere is this diverse culture more apparent
than in the lush, tropical city of Rio de Janiero, home of endless
beaches and the gentle lull of samba.
You’ll spend your summer session in this magnificent city,
taking advantage of such attractions as traditional Radizio
eateries, the expansive botanical garden in the center of Rio and,
of course, the towering statue of Christ the Redeemer located atop
Corcovado mountain.
As an added benefit to perfect your Portuguese, all students
stay in single occupancy home stays with Brazilian families
close to campus. Breakfast is supplied to all on class days.
