SPE 1155: Language and Intercultural Communication

Number of Credits: 3

Dates: July 4 - July 22, 2010 (Please note, students must arrive on July 4 and depart on July 22)

As globalization maintains its position as the dominant trend in world economics and business, the ability to communicate across cultural divides becomes increasingly vital. This course will focus on social and human-environment interactions in defining and evaluating intercultural communications in general as well as the implications of globalization on Bolivian culture. Students will combine in-class learning experiences with outside cultural and communicative activities to develop a deeper understanding of the ways in which culture and communication influence different aspects of our lives.

Classes will take place in Bolivia’s largest city, the beautiful and culturally rich government seat of Santa Cruz. The program will also include excursions to the cities of Cuevas and Santo Corazon.

In addition to the regular academic activities in the course, students will also have the opportunity to help students from local middle and high schools with conversational English and participate in service activities with locals of the Santo Corazon community.
