Discover France: Course
Descriptions
Please note: Some Discover France courses are taught in a
modular format similar to the Discover the World program. Each
semester includes 3 modules of five weeks each. Other courses last
for an entire semester.
General and Core
Courses:
ART 1775: Art and Architecture in
France
An overview of painting, sculpture, and architecture in rural
France and the city of Paris from Roman Gaul through the 19th
Century. 3 credits
ECO 1320: Economics of Poverty and Income
Inequality
An examination of the everyday life of poverty stricken
individuals. Critical analysis of the development of economic
policy, economic trends and the conditions that would
have to be changed if poverty is to be ended. 3 credits
PHI 3000C: Metaphysics
Prerequisite: PHI 1000C or permission of the
instructor.
An examination of the central epistemological and metaphysical
issues of modern philosophy. 3 credits
THE 2810: Religions of the
World
Prerequisite: THE 1000C. A critical introduction to the
study of world religions, exploring the beliefs, rituals and
ethical ideals of representative religious manifestations of the
past and present. 3 credits
GOV 3290: The Politics of
Revolution
Empirical theories of revolution through the reading and analysis
of major theoretic attempts to delineate the causes, development,
and effects of revolution, with examples of revolutions in world
history from the classical period to the present.
LLT 2121: Women Writers in France (In
English)
A study of rich and diverse literary works of french women writers
from the 12th century to the present, the changing sociohisorical
context and their common issues and themes that constitute a female
tradition. 3 Credits
French Language
Courses:
FRE 1000: Intensive French
This course aims to develop basic communication skills in French.
Through a progressive use of four skills, listening, speaking,
reading and writing, students develop oral and written proficiency
at a limited level within the context of French culture. 6
credits.
FRE 1010: French Level I
This course aims to develop basic communication skills in French.
Through a progressive use of the four skills: listening,
speaking, reading and writing, students develop oral and written
proficiency at a limited level within the context of French
culture. 3 credits
FRE 1020: French Level II
This course aims to develop basic communication skills in French.
Through a progressive use of the four skills: listening,
speaking, reading and writing, students develop oral and written
proficiency at a limited level within the context of French
culture. 3 credits
FRE 3120: Advanced French
Conversation
Drill and practice in conversational French. Topics are selected to
meet the requirements of daily life. 3
credits
LLT /FRE 3980: French Language
Internship (*French level - advanced)
Prerequisite: permission of the coordinator. Total
immersion experience in the field of interest chosen by the student
in France. 3 credits
