Consumer Debt Training Opportunities

The Law School is pleased to offer the following trainings to prepare students to participate in pro bono programs that assist pro se defendants in consumer debt cases in Queens Civil Court.

Open to All Students: CLARO is a walk-in clinic held on Friday afternoons where volunteer attorneys help pro se defendants draft litigation documents, develop settlement negotiation and trial strategies, and prepare to represent themselves in the litigation process. Law students conduct intake, clarify the status of cases, and help draft litigation documents.

Open to 2Ls and 3Ls: New York State Access to Justice Program’s Consumer Debt Volunteer Lawyer for a Day is a program providing limited representation to pro se defendants at pre-trial conferences. Students and attorneys represent defendants in court, work to negotiate favorable settlements, and advise on future trial strategies.
