SOC 2470: Gender in a Global
Context
Accepted Students
This year’s “Study Away” program promises to be an amazing
opportunity for students looking to expand their knowledge beyond
the classroom. This year, St. John’s College is offering SOC 2470:
Gender in a Global Context lead by Dr.
Roberta Villalon. This course will allow students to look into
the Sociology of Gender within the United States and throughout the
world. Students will learn about the experiences, opportunities and
challenges of men and women, boys and girls in all regions of the
globe throughout the semester, culminating in an end of the
semester trip to Toronto, Canada!
Toronto is one of the world’s most diverse cities, with nearly
all cultural groups represented and more than one hundred languages
and dialects spoken. As home to some of the most distinguished
programs addressing Gender Equality, your experiances in Toronto
with bring all readings and theories to life!
Who? Are you a
sophomore, junior of senior? Do you have a GPA of 3.0 or higher? If
your answer is “yes” to the above questions, congratulations! You
are eligible to apply!
What? Students will
enroll in SOC 1470: Gender in a Global Context on the Queens campus
during their spring 2013 semester. After spring finals have ended,
students will travel to Toronto, Canada alongside their classmates
and professor to enhance what they have learned on the Queens
campus by engaging in guest lectures and site visits.
When? After
the semester ends, students will spend 6 days/5 nights in Toronto
from May 16 to May 21, 2013. Prior to the trip, students will
be enrolled in the course for the whole of the spring semester,
where their coursework will prepare them for their trip up
North.
Where?
Toronto, Canada! Toronto is one of Canada’s most diverse and
culturally engaging cities and will serve as the perfect backdrop
to your coursework.
Why? The
real question here is, “Why Not?!” Earning a college degree
is a big accomplishment and a lot of hard work, so why not
incorporate enjoyable academic travel into the experience?
How
Much? If you still aren’t convinced if
this program is right for you, would it help if we mentioned how
hard we’ve worked to make it affordable? The $1,000 program fee
includes travel, lodging, academic and cultural visits, as well as
most meals! Of course, you'll want to bring a little extra to spend
on souvenirs and some meals, too!
**Please note: Tuition is charged in addition to the
deposit/program fee. Please check the tuition based on
your school, bearing in mind that undergraduates pay a single rate
as long as they take 12-18 credits per semester (in other words,
you won’t pay extra as long as you take your normal course
load!).
