HMT 1003: Food and Beverage
Service Operations
Accepted Students
This year’s “Study Away” program promises to be an amazing
opportunity for students looking to expand their knowledge beyond
the classroom. Dr.
Berkita Bradford will lead CPS students through an
exploration of the tourism industry in one of the country’s most
international locations, New Orleans.
As part of her “Food & Beverage Service Operations” course (HMT
1003), you’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at how tourism works in
a city with a complex, multi-cultural history. You’ll also sample
some of what the city has to offer, including its storied culinary
delights.
Not only will you experience the wonderfully diverse city
of New Orleans,
but you’ll gain a deeper appreciation of the discipline by seeing
it “in action”!
Who? Are you a sophomore,
junior or senior? Do you have a GPA of 3.0 or higher? If your
answer is “yes” to the above questions, congratulations! You are
eligible to apply!
What? The Dean’s Study Away
Program allows students to travel outside of New York for 5
nights/6 days where they will explore the vibrant culture of New
Orleans alongside their fellow classmates and professor. After
returning from their destination, students will complete the course
either online or on campus during the spring 2013 semester. Using
the experiences and lessons you learn during your time in
Louisiana, the course will draw significant comparisons to increase
cultural understanding.
When? Though
final travel dates are TBD, the program to New
Orleans will run for 5 nights/6 days during Spring Break
2013 (February 23 to March 2). The course will run as a normal
spring course otherwise—starting in January and continuing for the
remainder of the spring 2013 term once you’re back from New
Orleans.
Where? New Orleans,
Louisiana! (Known for its rich Creole and Cajun culture and
cuisine!)
Why? The
real question here is, “Why Not?!” Earning a college degree
is a BIG deal, so why not have a little fun and travel in the name
of academics??
How Much? If
you still aren’t convinced if this program is right for you, would
it help if we mentioned how hard we’ve worked to make it
affordable? As a program that has been subsidized by the
university, we expect the program fee to be $1,000 or less, which
includes travel, lodging, academic and cultural visits, as well as
most meals! Of course, you'll want to bring a little extra to spend
on souvenirs and some meals, too!
**Please note: Tuition is charged in addition to the
deposit/program fee. Please check the tuition based on
your school, bearing in mind that undergraduates pay a single rate
as long as they take 12-18 credits per semester (in other words,
you won’t pay extra as long as you take your normal course
load!).
