You
can be one of the first St. John’s students to experience life and
learning in glorious Seville this spring, as the Spanish city
becomes the newest destination for St. John’s remarkable
Discover the World (DTW) program.
Though space is limited, you can still
apply for this spring’s roll-out of an exciting new approach to
DTW. St. John’s innovative, multinational study abroad program
allows students to earn credit while immersing themselves in the
language and culture of three great European cities — in a single
semester.
“Students will find
Seville to be an inspired addition to our Discover the World
itinerary,” said Matthew G. Pucciarelli, Associate Vice President
of Global Studies at St. John’s. “But it’s vital that they apply
for the program as soon as possible.”
The
city replaces Salamanca as the Spanish component of DTW. Students
will continue to spend the rest of their DTW semester in Rome,
Italy, and Paris, France. In Rome, they live at St. John’s campus in the
centrally located Prati district, close to Vatican City. In Paris,
students will stay at St. John’s
location in the city’s popular St.-Germain district.
A Cultural Jewel in Southern Spain
Home to the legendary flamenco dance form, Seville is Spain’s
fourth largest city and the capital of beautiful Andalusia. The
sun-splashed region showcases southern Spain’s historic Arabic
cultural and architectural influences.
The city’s proximity to North Africa enhances its value as a
venue for exploring Islamic culture. For example, students may be
able to consider weekend trips to destinations like Morocco.
Seville also is home to the Archivo General de Indias,
or General Archive of the Indies. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the
archive is one of the world’s most important repositories of
archival documents recording the history of the Spanish Empire in
the Americas and the Philippines.
