Cultural Immersion

Our goal is to help you make the world your classroom.  At St. John’s, we hope to make you a more confident, well-rounded global citizen by:

  • Bringing the world to you through your coursework.  Imagine taking a behind-the-scenes tour of the Louvre with an expert or digging your way through an archaeological site in Greece. Perhaps you’ll decide to take our “City of Rome” class and spend many of your “classroom” hours seeing and touching the marvels of this ancient city. Our wide selection of programs will give you a new way to define your academic experience.
  • Providing you with opportunities to experience the culture during your daily life abroad.  For example, you might practice for Italian class while you chat with locals in the markets, cafes and churches, or bring your art history textbooks to life by exploring the masterpieces of Bernini in the Piazza Navona.
  • Giving you ways to learn about the culture while giving back. At the core of the St. John’s mission is the idea of helping underserved communities. Many of our programs offer service opportunities that give you a chance to see another side of the cities where you’ll live, truly engaging the people and culture—and growing as a person in the process.

Not Just A Tourist Experience

Naturally, you will start to become a true global citizen, but some of your most memorable experiences during your time abroad will not come from simply living in another country. Cultural immersion is more than just being there;  and as a study abroad student, you will be living the culture every day---not as a tourist, but more like a local, truly taking part in the life of another country. You will gain a greater understanding of the culture and language, gaining a deeper understanding of the world as you do.

We encourage you to give yourself over to this aspect of study abroad. Allow your perspective to shift to a global perspective, something that only comes from a deeper, more critical cultural immersion. Become a global citizen with St. John’s!
