Costs

We understand that study abroad is a large financial commitment, and understanding the full extent of that commitment is an important part of the decision-making process and the planning process for any Global Studies program. With that in mind, we want to give you an idea of the total costs usually incurred by Global Studies program participants, broken down into four main categories:

1. Program Fee

The program fee includes accommodations while you're abroad, any travel that takes place as part of your program (e.g. inter-country flights for Discover the World, weekend or end-of-semester excursions for Discover Italy and Discover France, etc.), and some meals, depending on the program. Program fees are listed on the home page for each of our programs in the Programs section of our website.

2. Tuition

Tuition for our programs is the same as what is charged for classes held on our New York City campuses. If you're participating in a semester-long program, your tuition will be exactly the same as what you normally pay. For short-term programs, tuition is determined on a per-credit basis according to the tuition rate of your college. You can determine your tuition by checking your college's tuition rate and multiplying by the number of credits you plan to take.

3. Airfare

For semester programs, we offer a special subsidized airfare rate for St. John's students. Information on these rates will be available in the Worldwide Wednesday newsletters for your program, or through our office. For other programs, students will have to book their own airfare, though we do coordinate group flights for certain programs. Be sure to check and see if there is a group flight or subsidy for your program before booking your flight.

4. Incidentals

Predicting how much money you'll spend during your time abroad can be challenging. Incidental costs vary widely from one student to the next, so it's impossible for us to say how much you should set aside. However, we can give you a general range based on reports from our students. Remember, these are estimates, and your own number will depend on many factors, including how often you eat out, how much traveling you do and how much you plan to spend on souvenirs.

Semester Programs (Approx. 16 Weeks): $4,500-$5,000

Short-term Programs: Approximately $250 per week ($500-$1,500, depending on program length)

For more information on planning for your incidental expenses, see the "Money 101" section of our Student Guide!

Total cost

The sum of the four components listed above will make up your total cost to study abroad. You can discuss your specific financial situation with one of our Global Studies specialists in the Office of Student Financial Services; if you are a student on the Queens campus, contact Ms. Rosemary Encarnacion in Bent Hall, (718) 990-6975 or encarnar@stjohns.edu. If you are a Staten Island campus student, contact Ms. Theresa Cantarella in the Kelleher Center, first floor, (718) 390-4350 or cantaret@stjohns.edu. And, as always, if you have any questions about costs associated with study abroad, or any other aspect of our programs, please contact our office.
