Paris is one of the most beautiful and culturally important cities in the world. For centuries, it has been a center of art, fashion, literature, and intellectual thought. Paris is known as the City of Light, since many of the thinkers that produced the Enlightenment in the 17th and 18th centuries lived in Paris.

The nickname is appropriate for an altogether different reason. The city's low skyline and open spaces, create an airiness that is foreign to a place like Manhattan. Although the Paris has grown tremendously since Monet found inspiration for many of his paintings there, you can still see the wonderful facade of the cathedral of Notre Dame bathed in the same light he saw.

St. John's Semester and Summer Programs in Paris immerses students in the French environment by putting them in daily contact with French culture, art, theater, food and people. Whether you choose to study French, painting, or business or you undertake an internship in your area of expertise, Paris is your classroom.

The city proper is actually quite small; no part is more than six miles from Notre Dame, which is at the heart of the city. Public transportation is excellent, but most students find walking the best way to explore the city. Buildings that defined an architectural style in the 18th century stand guard next to daring attempts to redefine architecture in the 20th century.

Paris is also fun. There are cafis, unique boutiques, and a vibrant art scene. And it is often said that the food at the most modest restaurant in France is better than the most expensive French food anywhere else.

The Semester and Summer Programs in Paris combines the linguistic and cultural benefits of studying abroad with the guidance and academic support of well-trained faculty. Students may take up to six credits during their summer and 12-15 credits in the semester programs.  Students study at the Dauphine University or they can also take classes at other universities in Paris, in French or English.
