Who should attend?
This program is designed for middle school and high school teachers
who teach insurance either as a specific course or as a part
of another subject. These subjects include business, consumer
education, economics, social science, home economics, mathematics,
driver education or other areas which include insurance.
Purpose
The purpose of this two-week, intensive program is to
enable teachers to become more effective in teaching
insurance. The Institute is designed to give teachers a
detailed understanding of all forms of insurance, with emphasis
upon their relevance to middle school and high school students and
their families.
Key Topics
The Institute covers the following topics:
- General principles of insurance
- How the industry operates
- Introduction to auto insurance and analysis of an auto
policy
- Introduction to homeowner’s and renter’s insurance and analysis
of homeowner’s policies
- Life insurance principles, policies and provisions
- Accident and health insurance provisions
- Insurance regulation
- The social security system
- Family financial planning
- Insurance careers

Graduate Credit
Upon successful completion of the program, participants will
be awarded three hours of graduate credit. It is mandatory that
each participant takes this course for credit.
Cost
The Griffith Insurance Education Foundation provides
scholarships to cover the costs of graduate credit, on-campus room
and board and classroom materials for secondary teachers selected
to attend the Institute. Participants will be responsible for their
own transportation to and from the location and weekend meals.
Schedule
The July Institute begins with an orientation at 5 p.m. on Sunday,
July 10 and meets Monday – Friday, July 11 – 22, 2011.
