Am I required to take the GMAT in order to
apply to your program?
The Graduate Management Admission Test (G.M.A.T.) is required of
all applicants to our graduate degree programs-except in MS
Tax where we accept the CPA. Students applying to the M.S. in
Management of Risk program may submit the official results from
either the GRE general exam or the GMAT. The GRE code for The Tobin
College of Business is: 2851. The GRE is not accepted for admission
to any other graduate program within The Tobin College of
Business.
For more information on the GMAT exam, you may visit http://www.mba.com/.
Your GMAT results are valid for a maximum of 5 years from the
original test date. You must submit a current GMAT score if
your existing score is older than 5 years.
Once you complete your exam, you may forward a copy of your
score report to our office for a preliminary review. However,
you must request that the Educational Testing Service (ETS) send an
official score report to St. John's University at the following

There are no minimum cut-off scores for the GMAT. Our
average score is currently 540. Should you take the GMAT more
than once, the Admission Committee will use the highest score
obtained.
What is the average GPA of accepted
students?
The current average GPA of our accepted students is 3.2 on a 4.0
scale.
The Admission Committee, however, will not make a decision
exclusively on the GPA, and will take all aspects of the
application into consideration. When evaluating the GPA, the
Admission Committee will also assess the program of study
completed. We are also very sensitive to the different
grading standards maintained worldwide.
What information should I include on my resume?
Please provide a detailed business resume in reverse
chronological order. At minimum, be sure to include titles, dates
of employment and whether the position was held on a full-time or
part-time basis. Also include a summary of your educational history
and any activities, awards and noteworthy achievements.
What are your application
deadlines?
The Tobin College uses a rolling admission policy.
Applications are acted upon once they are complete.
While the College makes every attempt to advise candidates of
missing application items, the application process is self-managed,
and it is the applicant's responsibility to ensure that all
materials reach the Graduate Admission Office in time for a
decision to be made for the upcoming term.
Our recommended deadlines are:
For Admission to the fall term - May 1
For Admission to the spring term - November 1
For those that want to be considered for a Graduate Assistantship -
March 1
Students applying from countries outside of the United States
are advised to apply well in advance of these deadlines, owing to
longer timelines required to process credentials and make visa
arrangements.
Will I be at a disadvantage if I do not
have an undergraduate degree in business?
The Tobin College wants to admit a class that represents various
backgrounds and experiences, as we believe that such diversity
helps to enhance the learning experience of all of our
students. We therefore encourage applications from students
of all undergraduate majors.
Approximately 37% of our accepted students do not have a formal
academic background in business. In order to be sufficiently
prepared for their advanced level business courses, these students
may be required to complete several Core courses, in order to
develop a solid knowledge base in the functional areas of business
to which they may not have been previously exposed.
I do not have any full-time work
experience. Am I eligible to apply to the program?
On average, our accepted full-time students hold 2 years
of full-time work experience and our accepted part-time students
hold 4 years of full-time work experience.
Although work experience is not a requirement for those wanting
to apply to our program, it does help to enhance the
application. We expect applicants that do not have full-time
work experience to at least have some part-time work or summer
internship experience. Significant volunteer work is also
considered favorably.
Do I need to take the
TOEFL?
The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required of
all applicants that do not hold a degree from a regionally
accredited academic institution where the language of instruction
is English.
Although the Tobin College does not have cut off scores for the
TOEFL, those students who score lower than 250 on the
computer based exam or lower than 600 on the paper based exam will
be required to sit for a St. John's University sponsored English
Language Proficiency Test. The ELP test is scheduled during
the International Student Orientation that takes place prior to the
start of each term. Depending on the results of the ELP test,
some students may need to take English courses to improve on their
general language and business communication skills.
Your TOEFL score is valid for only 2 years, and a new score will
have to be submitted if your existing score exceeds the 2-year
limit.
For additional information on the TOEFL, please visit: http://www.toefl.com/.

In Person
The Tobin College welcomes the opportunity to meet
with our prospective students in person for informational
interviews or for assistance with preparing their
applications. Please contact the campus to which you would
like to apply in order to make an appointment. Select evening
hours are available for the convenience of students who are
working full-time.
Representatives from the
Rome campus visit New York at various times during the
year. Please send an e-mail to our Rome campus for possible
dates to meet with a Rome
representative.
How long will it
take for me to get a decision on my application?
Once an application is complete, applicants should expect
a decision in as few as 2 weeks and in as many as 4
weeks.
Are interviews
required?
Evaluative interviews are extended by invitation only at the
discretion of the Admission Committee. If an interview is
deemed necessary applicants will be contacted by the Graduate
Admission Office to schedule a convenient time to
meet.
Students are welcome to make an
appointment for an informational interview with a member of the
admission staff in order to learn more about our programs and/or
address any questions they may have.
The Tobin College would be pleased to
grant a one-time application fee waiver for all applicants to the
Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island campuses who request it at the
time of their in-person Informational Interview. The fee
waiver is valid for on-line applications only.
I am still an undergraduate
student in my last year of study. Am I eligible to
apply?
If you are an undergraduate student in your last year of study, you
may apply to a TCB graduate program. You must provide a
transcript of all coursework to date, and all applications are
considered on a case-by-case basis. If you are accepted, you
must receive your undergraduate degree prior to enrolling at the
Tobin College. Your offer of acceptance will be contingent
upon receipt of your final transcript indicating that you have
completed all of your undergraduate degree requirements and that
your degree has been formally conferred by your undergraduate
institution.
What is the
tuition rate?
For the 2008-2009 academic year, the tuition rate is $880
per credit hour. There is also a non-refundable general fee of
$150 for students carrying more than 1 credit hour.
How many credits
will I need to complete the MBA?
The MBA program ranges from 36-54 credit hours for
completion. The Tobin College uses a waiver policy and will
allow students to waive out of up to 24 credits of Core Level
courses at the start of their program of study.
As a result, the number of credits required will vary according to
each individual. The programs in Accounting and Taxation may
require additional credits for those students that do not have
prior Accounting or Tax course work.
What is the
difference between transfer credits and waiver
credits?
The Tobin College will review undergraduate transcripts and
consider waiving a maximum of 24 credits at the core curriculum
level if the student has completed specific courses with
grades of B or better within the past five years in an
undergraduate business program at an AACSB accredited college
of university. In addition, the Tobin College will consider a
maximum of 6 transfer credits above the Core level if a student has
completed equivalent graduate courses at another M.B.A. program
that is accredited by AACSB International.
How long will it
take for me to complete the MBA?
All students are given a maximum of 5 years in which to complete
the program. The majority of our full-time students complete
the degree in 2 academic years, and our part-time students in 3.5 -
4 academic years.
I already have an
MBA. Will I be able to pursue a second MBA at The Tobin
College?
The Tobin College will accept applications only from those
individuals who hold an MBA that was obtained from an institution
outside of the United States.
Applicants who already hold an MBA
from an international institution must clearly justify to the
Admission Committee the reason why they need to
pursue additional study in business.
Am I able to defer
my acceptance to the program?
We will permit students who have been accepted to
our program the opportunity to defer their enrollment for a maximum
of one academic year. Additional deferments may be available
for extraordinary circumstances that are beyond the student's
immediate control.
Students called to active military duty
will be deferred, upon documentation of their deployment, for the
full period they are required to serve in a unit of the U.S. armed
services.
All students interested in deferring must
send a formal, written request addressed to the Admission
Committee, detailing the reasons for the deferral. The
Admission Committee will evaluate each request on its own
merit.
I have a 3-year
bachelor's degree. Am I eligible to apply?
There are several universities outside the United States that offer
a bachelor's degree upon the completion of 3 years of study. For
The Tobin College, the rule is that we will accept applications
only from those applicants that hold the equivalent of a U.S.
4-year degree from a regionally accredited college or
university.
Should you submit an application and the
Admission Committee determines that your degree is not eligible,
you will be advised accordingly, and suggestions will be made as to
the steps that you can take to meet our requirement.
My application was
declined. Will I be able to get feedback?
The Tobin College spends considerable time evaluating the candidacy
of our applicants. Through our portfolio approach, we are
able to take a comprehensive look at the application, carefully
assessing each part that was submitted. Although we receive
an increasing number of applications each term, and although it is
difficult for members of our Admission team to personally attend to
the many requests we get, we make every effort to schedule a
counseling appointment, in-person or by telephone to suggest ways
in which a declined applicant's candidacy may be improved for a
future term.
