Admission FAQs

How is a decision made on my application?
The Admission Committee uses a portfolio approach to review and evaluate an applicant to our programs. We take a comprehensive look at all materials in the application, assessing each item on its own merit as well as part of the collective application package.

We desire students who we are confident have the capability to complete our coursework, are proficient in the English language and possess professional experiences that contribute to meaningful classroom interaction.

What is the average GPA of accepted students?
The Admission Committee will not make a decision exclusively on the GPA, and will take all aspects of the application into consideration.  When evaluating the GPA, the Admission Committee will also assess the program of study completed.   The current average GPA of our accepted students is 3.2 on a 4.0 scale.

Will I be at a disadvantage if I do not have an undergraduate degree in business?
The Tobin College wants to admit a class that represents various backgrounds and experiences, as we believe that such diversity helps to enhance the learning experience of all of our students.  We therefore encourage applications from students of all undergraduate majors.

Approximately 40% of our accepted students do not have a formal academic background in business.  In order to be sufficiently prepared for their advanced level business courses, these students may be required to complete several Core courses, in order to develop a solid knowledge base in the functional areas of business to which they may not have been previously exposed.

How long will it take for me to get a decision on my application?
Once a completed application
is received, including all official and require documents, applicants should expect a decision in four to six weeks.

What is the tuition rate?
For the 2012-2013 academic year, the tuition rate is $1,060 per credit hour. There is also a non-refundable general fee of $170 for students carrying more than 1 credit hour.

How many credits will I need to complete the MBA?
The MBA program ranges from 36-54 credit hours for completion.  The Tobin College uses a waiver policy and will allow students to waive out of up to 24 credits of Core Level courses at the start of their program of study.    As a result, the number of credits required will vary according to each individual.  The programs in Accounting and Taxation may require additional credits for those students that do not have prior Accounting or Taxation course work.

What is the difference between transfer credits and waiver credits?
The Tobin College will review undergraduate transcripts and consider waiving a maximum of 24 credits at the core curriculum level if the student has completed specific courses with grades of B or better within the past five years in an undergraduate program. In addition, the Tobin College will consider a maximum of 6 transfer credits above the Core level if a student has completed equivalent graduate courses at another MBA program that is accredited by AACSB International.

How long will it take for me to complete the MBA?
All students are given a maximum of 5 years in which to complete the program.  The majority of our full-time students complete the degree in 2 academic years, and our part-time students in 2.5 to 3.5 academic years.

Am I able to defer my acceptance to the program?
We will permit students  who have been accepted to our program the opportunity to defer their enrollment for a maximum of one academic year.  Additional deferments may be available for extraordinary circumstances that are beyond the student's immediate control.

Students called to active military duty will be deferred, upon documentation of their deployment, for the full period they are required to serve in a unit of the U.S. armed services.

All students interested in deferring must send a formal, written request addressed to the Admission Committee, detailing the reasons for the deferral.  The Admission Committee will evaluate each request on its own merit.

My application was declined.  Will I be able to get feedback?
The Tobin College spends considerable time evaluating the candidacy of our applicants.  Through our portfolio approach, we are able to take a comprehensive look at the application, carefully assessing each part that was submitted.  Although we receive an increasing number of applications each term, and although it is difficult for members of our Admission team to personally attend to the many requests we get, we make every effort to schedule a counseling appointment, in-person or by telephone to suggest ways in which a declined applicant's candidacy may be improved for a future term.
