St. John’s University’s Committee on Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS) and The Peter J. Tobin College of Business Honor Jose Antonio Garcia, Chief Financial Officer of the Spanish Broadcast

April 11, 2005

Queens, NY – St. John’s University Committee on Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS), in conjunction with The Peter J. Tobin College of Business, recently honored Mr. Joseph Garcia (‘77MBA), Chief Financial Officer of the Spanish Broadcasting System with a distinguished alumnus award.

“I am deeply honored and extremely moved to have been given this award,” said Mr. Garcia. “I have a great love for the United States because of the opportunities it affords to those who are willing to work hard to achieve their dreams. I am grateful to alma mater for this wonderful award.”

Mr. Garcia escaped communist Cuba as a teenager under a program that allowed parents to obtain visas for their children to enter the United States. He was drafted into the U.S. Army and served a tour of duty from 1966-68; he later earned his undergraduate and Master’s degrees before working for General Foods, Philip Morris International and Revlon, mostly in their Latin American operations.

As CFO of the Spanish Broadcasting System, Mr. Garcia is responsible for that organization’s financial operations. Founded in 1984, the Spanish Broadcasting System has established itself as one of two radio operators serving the Hispanic population of the United States, with 21 stations in major markets including New York, Los Angeles, Miami and San Francisco.

For the past five years, Mr. Garcia has been a member of the Advisory Board of The Peter J. Tobin College of Business of St. John’s University, significantly contributing to the growth of the college. Of particular personal interest to him are programs that assist the Hispanic population, thus his acknowledgement of the work being done by the St. John’s Committee on Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS). In his speech, Mr. Garcia, addressing the many Latino students present at this event, spoke about how his mastery of two languages and profound knowledge of Latino cultures helped him succeed in his professional career.
