The Peter J. Tobin College of Business-McNair Scholar
June 01, 2006
Queens Campus -
Tobin College of Business Senior, Nygel Roach, has successfully
completed the Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program. The Ronald E.
McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program was established by the
U.S. Department of Education in 1989 to encourage and prepare
interested and eligible undergraduates for doctoral studies through
their involvement in research and scholarly activities. The
ultimate goals of the Program are to both ensure that undergraduate
participants graduate with the necessary skills and knowledge for
admission into graduate programs and to diversify college and
university faculties.
In order to qualify, a student must maintain a semester and
cumulative GPA of at least 3.0, take the GRE and apply to at least
six graduate programs of their choice. Students must also
participate in various cultural and social events. This did not
pose a threat to Mr. Roach who plays basketball for St. John's and
who was able to meet the academic requirements.
As a Business and Finance major, Nygel Roach has an interest in
the labor and human aspect of business, and, therefore, chose to
research the North American Free Trade Association's (NAFTA)
implications on the Central American Free Trade Association
(CAFTA).
Consisting of between 20 and 30 students, this year's scholars
were a diverse class and Mr. Roach hopes to someday close the gap
on the under-respresented cultures within the faculty of many
Universities. After graduation this Summer, Nygel Roach hopes to
continue to attend The Peter J. Tobin College of Business in order
to obtain his MBA.
