United States District Court, Southern District of New York
Judge McMahon was appointed to the Southern District bench in 1998.
She is a graduate of The Ohio State University (1973) and Harvard
Law School (1976). From 1976 until 1995, except for a ten-month
hiatus serving in the United States Mission to the United Nations,
she was associated with the law firm of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind,
Wharton & Garrison. She became a partner in the firm in 1984,
the first woman litigator to be elected. In 1994, Ms. McMahon
served as Chair of The Jury Project and authored the comprehensive
report that led to major jury reform in New York State. She also
served, until her judicial appointment, as Vice Chancellor of the
Episcopal Diocese of New York. In 1995, Ms. McMahon was appointed a
judge of the New York Court of Claims. From 1995 until her
appointment to the federal bench, Judge McMahon served as an Acting
Justice of the New York State Supreme Court, sitting in Criminal
Term in New York County.
