Dr. James W. Thompson
Professor of Accounting and
TaxationProfessor James W. Thompson holds an Ed.D. in financial issues
in higher education through a joint degree program between the
Teachers College and the Graduate School of Business at Columbia
University. His dissertation was titled "A Study of the
Effects of Inflation on the Plant Fund of College and University
Financial Statements" and the research and dissertation were
entirely accounting related and the committee included Columbia
Graduate School of Business Accounting faculty. He is currently
registered as a licensed Certified Public Accountant in the State
of New York.
Professor Thompson has over twenty-five years of full-time
experience as a teacher and researcher. He served as Chair of the
Department of Accounting and Taxation for the nine-year period
1989-1998. He is the recipient of the PricewaterhouseCoopers
Excellence in Education Award. He has authored four books,
thirty-two articles in peer-reviewed journals, two chapters in
books, and a book of readings for the Department's graduate
capstone course. His publications have centered about the
application of accounting theory. Major publications include the
following topics: Impairment of Long-lived Assets, Comprehensive
Income, Earnings Per Share and Discontinued Operations. He is
the recipient of the University's Faculty Outstanding Achievement
Medal. He currently (since 1996) serves on the Finance Board
of a major religious community on Long Island. His academic
background includes a prior full-time faculty appointment to an
AACSB accredited college and past service as the MBA external
adviser for an international accounting program.
Professor Thompson has served as external reviewer for
accounting programs in different States, and currently is the
external reviewer for a major New York City College. He
obtained his audit experience at Peat, Marwick, Mitchell &
Company (now KPMG) and has experience as the controller of
Marymount-Manhattan College, Mannes College of Music, and Malcolm
King College. He has been the independent auditor for the
Urban League of Long Island since 1977. He has provided
consulting services to various corporations, including going public
and filing with the SEC.
