Gary Mongiovi

Associate Professor of Economics and Finance

Dr. Mongiovi received his Ph.D. in Economics from the New School for Social Research in 1988. His research covers a wide range of topics in economic theory and the history of economic thought - in particular, the theory of employment, Keynesian economics, and the economic thought of David Ricardo and Karl Marx. The main focus of his current research is on the life and work of the Italian economist Piero Sraffa (1898-1983).

Professor Mongiovi's published articles include: "Notes on Say's Law, Classical Economics and the Theory of Effective Demand," Contributions to Political Economy (1990); The Ricardo Debates: A Comment," Canadian Journal of Economics (1991); "Misinterpreting Ricardo: A Review Essay," Journal of the History of Economic Thought (1994); and "Sraffa's Critique of Marshall: A Reassessment," Cambridge Journal of Economics (1996). He is the co-editor, with Christof R?hl, of Macroeconomic Theory: Diversity and Convergence (Cheltenham, UK: Edward Elgar, 1993), and is currently completing a book on Distribution and Effective Demand for Macmillan.

Professor Mongiovi has been a visiting scholar at the University of Rome "La Sapienza" in 1995, and at the Third University of Rome in 1994. He has presented papers at numerous conferences in the United States and Europe, and has given invited lectures at the Universities of Rome, Hohenheim, Cambridge, and Graz. In 1989 he was invited to Budapest by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the Hungarian Ministry of Education to present a series of lectures on Sraffa and the Labour Theory of Value.

Since September 1995, Professor Mongiovi has also been the co-editor, with Steve Pressman, of the Review of Political Economy.
