Often, the best, most inspiring advice
comes from listening to the personal experiences of others.
Communication with professionals can provide realistic information
about career options, job responsibilities, and employment
conditions. In addition, they may be able to refer you to other
contacts in the industry.
The
COACH program is comprised of alumni of St. John's University and
other colleges representing diverse career fields nationwide, who
have offered to share their career experiences with students and
other alumni.
Getting a COACH is an excellent way to
meet people in your field and learn about career opportunities.
Please understand that COACHes are to be contacted for information
about their careers, their organization, and their industry- not
for job opportunities.
Your Responsibilities:
You, the protege, will be responsible for
contacting the COACH to arrange a meeting (informational interview)
that accommodates both of your schedules.
Preferably, the meeting should occur at
the COACH's place of employment. If a meeting in person is not
possible, a phone or e-mail interview is acceptable.
After the initial meeting, you may want
to arrange a follow-up session or ask if it is possible to make
contact periodically to keep your COACH updated on your
progress.
