"Shoot for a Dream" Charity Event in Honor of Dr. John W. Dobbins Jr.
November 26, 2007
Queens, NY (November 26, 2007) – Students from St. John’s University rallied around one of their own on November 17th at Carnesecca Arena on the Queens campus, in honor of Dr. John W. Dobbins, Jr., Associate Professor of Marketing.
The Dr. John W. Dobbins Jr.’s “Shoot for a Dream” charity event was organized and conceptualized by Edward Henry (one of Dr. Dobbins’ students) and was sponsored by Residence Life, RHA, Student Government and the Campus Activities Board at St. John’s University.
“What a fantastic event! And what a wonderful cause! John Dobbins is one of the truly great professors at St. John’s, and this honor is richly deserved,” said Dr. Steven Papamarcos, Dean of The Peter J. Tobin College of Business. “How better to celebrate what John stands for, indeed, what the University stands for, than by serving others in this way. Thanks to the students for making this event real. And thanks to Dr. Dobbins for all that he has contributed to the St. John’s community.”
More than $4,000 was raised during the star-studded night with all proceeds benefiting the “Garden of Dreams” Foundation for children with cancer. Former New York Knicks star John Starks participated in an on-court basketball competition with a lucky fan while the Knicks City Dancers entertained the crowd.
St. John’s students participated in a 3-on-3 basketball challenge between residence halls and a Slam Dunk Contest highlighted the evening. In addition, those in attendance had the unique opportunity of winning raffle prizes that included autographed New York Knicks Championship limited edition memorabilia, tickets to St. John’s and Knicks games and other incredible prizes.
