November 11, 2009
In collaboration with the university’s Academic Service
Learning, marketing students in the Fall 2009 Sales Promotion
course on the Staten Island campus have developed a strategic sales
promotion plan that will be implemented on the Staten Island campus
during the week of November 16th, in support of the GLOBE Microloan
Program.
As a student-managed program, the GLOBE (Global Loan
Opportunities for Budding Entrepreneurs) Program is guided by its
mission to help alleviate poverty in developing countries by
providing small business loans to entrepreneurs in impoverished
areas who would otherwise not have access to traditional sources of
credit. GLOBE is inspired by the work of 2006 Nobel Peace
Prize-winner Muhammad Yunus, founder of Grameen Bank and pioneer of
modern-day microcredit targeted at the world’s poorest
entrepreneurs, mostly women, with the aim of lifting them and their
families out of poverty.
The main events of the fundraiser, which will be held during
International Education Week (November 16-19), will be a week-long
50/50 raffle with a culminating event on November 19, 2009. Raffle
tickets will be sold on campus November 16-19 and winners will be
announced at the November 19 event.
On November 16-19, raffle tickets will be sold in
DaSilva Hall and students will be on hand to provide
information about GLOBE. Contests and games will be conducted in
the cafeteria from noon to 3 p.m. on November 19.
Thus far students have collected prizes that include:
sports jerseys, video games, baskets of coffee and chocolate
(provided by the Ozanam scholars), NFL tickets and other desirable
items, all of which were donated to the cause by Dean Narducci,
Student Life, the Ozanam Scholars and others. Representatives from
Greek Life and the Accounting Club have also agreed to
help, in a campus-wide involvement.
This event is designed with several outcomes in mind: to raise
awareness of the GLOBE microloan course which is open to Staten
Island students, to raise funds for the loan program, to learn more
about sales promotion practice and to connect our campus to
GLOBE.
In conjunction, Dr. Linda Sama's GLOBE class will be holding an
appreciation luncheon on Tuesday, November 17th to honor donors and
supporters of the program. At the luncheon, students will share
updates and information on the progress and current goals of the
program.
