The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences provides students with
a solid background in the chemical and biomedical sciences –
allowing for better interpretation of those areas in the pharmacy
curriculum that can best be defined in terms of chemistry and
biology. The department also imparts knowledge of the cause and
prevention of infectious diseases, and prepares individuals for
rendering health services to the public and allied medical
professions. The goal is to acquaint the student with the nature,
composition, standardization and evaluation of natural and
synthetic substances used in the treatment of disease. The
department also teaches the action of drugs in current use on the
living body (especially human) and the manner in which these are
employed in medical practice. Additionally, the department enables
the student to interpret and keep abreast of the literature in
therapeutic and medical research, and provides instruction in
coursework for allied health students with an interest in
toxicology and basic biomedical sciences.
On the graduate level, the objectives of the Department of
Pharmaceutical Sciences are to provide students interested in the
pharmaceutical sciences (pharmacology, toxicology, medicinal
chemistry and pharmacotherapeutics) and medical technology with
advanced knowledge of the fundamental branches of the
pharmaceutical sciences and allied health professions, while also
offering opportunities for original investigation. Such preparation
enables graduates to assume leadership positions in their area of
interest.
