Dr. Mitchell Trichon, a member of the faculty in the
Communication Sciences and Disorders Department of St. John’s
College, was featured on Inside Edition and in New
York Metro Parents magazine as an expert on Stuttering.
The Inside Edition segment talked about the
Oscar-nominated film, The King’s Speech, but the key focus of the
interview was to highlight the everyday challenges presented by
stuttering, which 5% of children and 1% of adults face.

The King’s Speech, starring Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild
winner Colin Firth, gives an accurate account of King George VI who
suffered from stuttering disorder and was considered unfit to be
king. With the help of a speech therapist named Lionel Logue,
King George VI gains the courage to face the challenges of
stuttering and leads the country through war.
Trichon, who manages his own stutter and teaches a graduate course
in Fluency Disorders at St. John’s, serves as Chapter Leader of the
Queens Chapter of the National Stuttering Association. The
chapter has been in existence for over two years and meets on the
Queens campus of St. John's University. The group typically
serves 15-20 adults including current students and alumni.
Producers from Inside Edition visited a recent meeting to gain a
first-hand account of the support that individuals receive at
Trichon’s meetings. The segment, which aired on January 26,
featured Trichon and several support group members, who all
commented on the film and the challenges of stuttering.
A member of the Board of Directors of the National Stuttering
Association, Trichon was also featured in the January 28 edition of
the parenting magazine, New York Metro Parents where he gave his
insights into the reality of what parents of children who have the
disorder deal with.
