UNIVERSITY IN TOP 32 TEAMS AT NATIONAL TOURNAMENT
Laverne, CA – 160
of the best debate teams in the country met at the University of
Laverne campus in southern California the weekend of April
13th to determine who would become national champion. St. John’s
was ranked in the top 32 teams at this competition.
Four two person
teams represented St. John’s University in an intense 6 round match
up against the likes of Yale, Duke, The University of Vermont,
Cornell University, The University of Alaska, and many
others. The team of Elkhansaa Farhane and Logan Gomez were
ranked 24th after preliminary debates and the team of
Shama Ams and Sanjam Sethi were ranked 28th. Both teams
debated in the octafinal round on the topic This House believes
that Governments should implement protectionist policies in favor
of environmentally friendly foreign companies, rather than
non-environmentally friendly domestic ones.
St John’s in the competition were the team of Frank Zhao and Misbah
Hyder, as well as the team of Catarina Goncalves and Alia’a Haruun.
Graduate assistant Josiah Peterson, and Dr. Jaime Wright of the
Rhetoric, Communication, and Theater department accompanied the
team as well.
ends the season of competition for St. John’s Debate, however
meetings continue through the end of the academic year. Any St.
John’s student is welcome to attend any meeting or practice as
joining the program requires no audition, try-out, or fee. Meetings
are every Tuesday and Thursday night at 7pm in room 203 of St John
