This workshop will prepare clinical and school-based
professionals with effective prevention, intervention, and
postintervention strategies with regard to school-related violence
incidents. Practices and procedures relevant to a broad spectrum of
education and mental health professionals will be explored.
Specific areas to be addressed include warning signs for suicide
and violence, social and psychological impact of trauma, counseling
approaches in crisis intervention, identifying and intervening with
victims and perpetrators of bullying, and the role of creative
arts, memorialization, and survivor missions in fostering
post-trauma adaptation. Counseling and programmatic initiatives
which promote resiliency and positive school climates will be
explored. Notable highlights of the Safe Schools Against Violence
in Education (SAVE) legislation will be reviewed. Seminar
activities will include interactive group discussions, group
analysis of crisis vignettes, and video presentations.
