Adoption Conference 2006

St. John's Unversity will be hosting their annual adoption conference. The 2-day conference will take place Friday October 13, 2006 and Saturday October 14, 2006 at the Manhattan Campus.

Conference Description
In 2000, our first conference entitled, “The Adoption Journey: Psychological, Socio-Political, and Legal Challenges,” addressed the psychological, sociological, socioeconomic, sociopolitical, and legal implications of adoption for the adoption triad (i.e. adopted persons, birth families, and adoptive families).  Through that conference, mental health and human service providers began to dialogue about the specific needs of adoption triad members and the implications of those needs for these providers. We continued the dialogue four years ago in 2002 with our second conference entitled, “The Lifelong Adoption Journey: Through the Eyes of the Adopted,” where the lifespan adoption issues and concerns of adopted persons were examined based on the experiences of four panels of adopted persons who were also psychologists, social workers, business people, adoption advocates, journalists, and filmmakers. Our third conference in 2004 entitled, "The Dynamics of Adoption: A Three-Way Mirror," facilitated a dialogue that allowed conference attendees to hear directly from adoptive parents, birthparents, and adoptees as well as from therapists with expertise in adoption who will assist in better understanding the dynamics that occur within adoption triads.

As with our three previous conferences, we seek to create educational and experiential opportunities for professionals, scholars, students, and those touched by adoption to learn more about yet another aspect of the adoption experience both domestic and international. Presentations will compare and contrast the complexity of adoption through real and authentic examinations of similarities and differences among same race adoptions, transracial adoption, and transcultural adoption.
