Paul Lauritzen, the Paul E. McKeever Chair of Moral Theology for
2005-06 will give a presentation entitled
"Commodifying Education"
with Fellows of the Vincentian Center for Church and Society and
Faculty of The School of Education.
Although commentators disagree both about the reasons for the
“corporatization” of higher education and whether this is a good
thing, there is little disagreement that universities have
increasingly moved to adopt corporate models and practices in
recent years. Although there are many different manifestations of
this dynamic, everything from hiring university presidents from the
business world instead of academia to outsourcing evermore areas of
university operations, Dr. Lauritzen focuses on two areas where
market practices have come to characterize university operations in
ways that challenge traditional understandings of educational
values. The first concerns the way the language of business has
begun to frame discussions of typical university practices and
thereby to change those practices, e.g., thinking of students as
“customers.” The second concerns the way universities have, as
institutions, begun to behave in ways characteristic of for-profit
companies instead of as not-for-profit social organizations.
