The Department of Theology and Religious Studies hosts a conversation entitled

"Commodifying Science and Health Care"

featuring Paul Lauritzen, the Paul E. McKeever Chair of Moral Theology for 2005-06.

In a letter to the apostolic nuncio in Poland in March 2002, Pope John Paul II noted the increasing commodification of science and health care as "one of the most serious ethical problems facing the international community." In the pope's words, "there is a risk that science-based businesses and health care structures can be set up not in order to provide the best possible care for people in accordance with their dignity, but in order to maximize profits and increase business . . ." This presentation explores the growing influence of the market in shaping scientific and medical research and why this trend is morally troubling.with invited faculty from St. John’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions, and the College of Professional Studies.
