The Department of Theology and Religious Studies hosts a
conversation entitled
"Commodifying Science and Health
Care"
featuring Paul Lauritzen, the Paul E. McKeever Chair of Moral
Theology for 2005-06.
In a letter to the apostolic nuncio in Poland in March 2002,
Pope John Paul II noted the increasing commodification of science
and health care as "one of the most serious ethical problems facing
the international community." In the pope's words, "there is a risk
that science-based businesses and health care structures can be set
up not in order to provide the best possible care for people in
accordance with their dignity, but in order to maximize profits and
increase business . . ." This presentation explores the growing
influence of the market in shaping scientific and medical research
and why this trend is morally troubling.with invited faculty from
St. John’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the College of
Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions, and the College of
Professional Studies.
