The world of crime and deviance is changing rapidly. While still
encompassing the traditional realm of burglars and robbers and
street gangs, it now includes new forms of criminality, including:
terrorists, international drug traffickers, cyber criminals,
multi-national white-collar criminals, and international organized
crime groups. To better understand these trends, our
Master of Arts in Criminology and Justice provides preparation
in both traditional theories and descriptions of crime as well as
modern interpretations and research methodologies. The latter
includes training in computer-based statistical applications, as
well as forensic analysis of physical and psychological
evidence.
Students who are accepted into our MA program in the College of
Liberal Arts and Sciences immediately become part of a larger
intellectual community of
faculty scholars where research, practice and theory are
integrated, explored and advanced. Our graduates witness
first hand, through engaging classroom and internship experiences
how criminological research enables effective and responsible
discourse and changes in public policy. We cannot think of a
more exciting place to research, study and learn about crime and
modern crime control than in New York City. And we can think
of no better place to launch your future than St. John's
University.
The program is designed to prepare students for:
-
careers in research and analysis for government agencies and
private consulting firms
- further graduate training leading to careers in academia,
positions in policy-making organizations at the state, local and
federal levels of government
- careers in criminal justice agencies
