Student Organizations

Alumni Organizations
Graduates of the Division of Library and Information Science are automatically eligible for membership in the Alumni Association. Alumni serve on Division committees and sponsor such activities as the annual William A. Gillard lecture.

American Society for Information Science (ASIS)
Since 1972, ASIS has chartered an official student chapter at St. John's University's Division of Library and Information Science (SJU-ASIS Student Chapter). The purpose of the chapter is to provide an organization through which St. John's students may participate in and carry forward the programs and purposes of ASIS.

The student membership fee entitles ASIS student members to receive the Journal and the Bulletin of ASIS and other communications and news of meetings, and to participate in activities of the student chapter. Student members also have the privilege of using the ASIS placement service.

Student memberships at discount rates are available in most national and regional professional associations. For example, the New York Library Association offers its publications and other membership discounts at a reduced rate for students and recent graduates. Information is on file in the Division of Library and Information Science office.

Beta Phi Mu
Graduates of the Division of Library and Information Science with a superior record and recommended by the Director are eligible for membership in Beta Phi Mu.

Library and Information Science Student Association
The Student Association plays an important role in facilitating communications between students and faculty. The organization may send two representatives to faculty meetings to the Educational Policy Committee. All students are automatically members. There are no dues or fees. Students have the valuable opportunity of participating in the decision making process by serving on committees within the division. Interested students may submit their names and interests to the president of the Student Association.

Special Libraries Association
Since 1971, the Special Libraries Association has chartered an official Student Group (SJU-SLA Student Group). The group promotes the interests of the Special Libraries Association and its program through sponsored lectures. Student membership fee entitles students to certain membership privileges, including receiving Special Libraries and other SLA publications as well as announcements of SLA meetings.
