Student Chapter of SLA

The Special Libraries Association (SLA) of St. John's University exists to support the needs of our library science students, promote the study of alternative information occupations, and encourage active membership in the SLA.  We also hope to foster an exploration of unconventional sectors of employment for information professionals, including, but not limited to corporate offices, the government, law firms, the financial sector, non-profits, and academic institutions.

Highlight Events of 2011-12

  • United Nations Library Tour - On February 14, 2012, the students met with reference librarians at the United Nations Dag Hammarskjold Library who gave an overview of the structure and processes of the U.N. Library followed by a Q & A session.  We then finished with a tour of the closes stacks and archives, which included records as far back as the 1920's League of Nations.
  • New York Historical Society Visit - On April 26, 2012, we organized a trip to the recently renovated New York Historical Society.  There we were met by manuscripts librarian, Ted O'Reilly, who gave us an in depth presentation of the library, which included showing us approximately 20 or so unique historical items, after which we had a Q & A session.
