RACS: Reference Assistance for
Catholic Schools
This web-based reference support system allows librarians,
teachers, and administrators in Catholic schools to submit a
reference question or request for research assistance directly to
the Division of Library and Information Science through a specially
designed website, accessible on the Division’s webpage
[www.stjohns.edu/pls/portal30/sjudev.sjc_refform]. Upon receipt,
queries are assigned to a student(s) in one of my reference classes
who then researches and prepares a response. I then review the
response with the student and it is forwarded to the librarian,
teacher or administrator. This service has two immediate benefits:
1) It gives my students hands-on experience answering real queries
and 2) It provides much-needed reference support to Catholic
schools in New York. The initial planning of the service and the
design of the question submission form was completed as a service
learning project by students in my Advanced Reference course. The
service is available to three schools participating in the Library
Connections Program of the Archdiocese of New York.
