High-Quality Offerings
A degree from St. John’s is particularly appropriate for a
library staff employees because the university seeks to prepare its
students through high-quality programs to serve the underserved.
The degree also provides an opportunity to select a concentration
in Information Studies, Children and Information, or both from the
ALA-accredited Division of Library and Information Science as part
of a St. John’s undergraduate program.
If you have an associate’s degree, obtain a Bachelor of Arts in
Liberal Studies with a minor in Information Studies, Children and
Information, or both.
If you do not have an associate’s degree, obtain an Associate of
Arts in Liberal Arts with a concentration in Information Studies,
Children and Information, or both, and then undertake the Bachelor
of Arts in Liberal Studies or another bachelor’s degree.
Other degree programs with the information minors or
concentrations are also available.
Flexible Course Selection
These degrees provide flexibility. In addition to the
intellectually engaging core of courses and other degree
requirements, you choose among a variety of courses in the arts,
sciences or social sciences, very appropriate for adult students,
particularly those who work in a library. These courses complement
well the information minors or concentrations.
Financing
St. John’s will accept payment of tuition and fees after
each semester directly from the Queens Library for successful
completion of approved courses by eligible employees. You do not
need to pay in advance and wait for reimbursement.
Convenient Scheduling
The programs may be completed on the St. John’s Queens
Campus, Staten Island Campus, or online. Some courses may even be
offered at the Main Branch of the Queens Library. The entire
program can be completed online, albeit with fewer choices for
electives.
Credit for Life Experience or Past
Work
St. John’s accepts credit for previously completed college
work. You may also receive credit for Advanced Placement, CLEP, and
other approved credit-by-testing programs. Students with
appropriate life experience may receive credit based on a special
assessment which determines that the knowledge from the experience
is equivalent to the completion of a particular course.
Supplemental Experiences
Students are eligible to participate in a variety of
supplemental experiences from St. John’s University’s Division of
Library and Information Science, including tours of libraries and
information centers, colloquia, and workshops.
