Bienvenidos!
St. John’s University, one of the largest Catholic Universities
in the United States, has supported Hispanic literature and culture
in various ways:
- sponsoring a series of lectures and symposia;
- inviting thought provoking individuals to share their ideas and
work;
- creating a Committee on Latin American and Caribbean studies
(CLACS) that offers an Advanced Interdisciplinary Certificate;
- and, through the Department of Languages and Literatures,
co-sponsoring the publication of Annuario Medieval, a
scholarly journal that Focuses on the literature of the Middle
Ages.
As further evidence of its commitment to Hispanic Studies, the
University has provided opportunities for study abroad in Latin
America and in Spain. It has established the Gabriela Mistral
Scholarship/Beca Gabriela Mistral, named after the Chilean Nobel
Prize Laurate. Entre Rascacielos, Epsilon Kappa’s
Literary Journal, publishes works written by students and alumni
and members of the Hispanic community.
Master of Arts Program in
Spanish
The Department also offers a program of graduate study in the
literature, linguistics and civilization of the Hispanic world,
leading to the degree of Master of Arts. This specialized program
is intended to prepare students for further scholarship, teaching
at all levels, or related careers. The Department sponsors an
ongoing series of lectures by prominent literary figures from both
Spain and Latin America and the publication of the literary journal
Anuario Medieval.
Earn a B. A. / M.A. Degree In
Spanish
The Department Of Languages and Literatures offers a strong
Graduate Program in Spanish that focuses on Spanish and
Spanish-American Literatures and Linguistics. It also offers
a unique accelerated B.A. / M.A. combined degree. Sophomores
who have completed 12 credits in Spanish, with a 3.5 or above index
and with a 3.0 cumulative index, are encouraged to apply.
