The primary function of the Language Laboratory is to provide
the environment in which students can learn to discriminate between
the various sounds of a language, to recognize and reproduce them
as correctly as possible by listening to their own performance in
comparison with a native speaker's model, and finally to associate
sound and meaning at the word and sentence level with appropriate
oral exercises. This is achieved with the use of an audio and/or
video program. Since the four skills involved in the acquisition of
a new language should be acquired in the following order:
listening, speaking, reading and writing, labwork is particularly
important in the early stages of language acquisition by building
up the base for reading and writing. Under current standards at SJU
and using the Proficiency Guidelines of the American Council on the
Teaching of Foreign Languages, lab sessions and labwork aim to help
the student achieve an intermediate level of listening and speaking
proficiency after 2 semesters, and an advanced level after 4
semesters.

The Laboratory is located in room B 48, St. Augustine Hall.
