In addition, students must present evidence of their knowledge of a foreign language (normally either French or German) by passing the ETS examination or a reading course in the appropriate language-for-which no credit is given. Upon approval of the department and the Dean, a language other than French or German may be substituted if such substitution is deemed desirable because of the nature of the student’s special field. Under the guidance of the mentor, the student must prepare a satisfactory thesis on a subject in a field of concentration.
Entrance Requirements
For admission to graduate studies in Government & Politics, students are expected to have an undergraduate preparation of at least 18 credits in the field and a 3.0 g.p.a. Any deficiency in preparation may require supplementary course work for admission in the form of suitable graduate courses, as determined by the Department.
Concentrations
The Government & Politics Department offers five areas of concentration:
- American Government (Queens Campus only)
- Comparative Government (Queens Campus only)
- International Relations (Queens and Rome Campus)
- Political Theory (Queens Campus only)
- Public Administration and Public Service (Queens Campus only)
Comprehensive Examination
Students pursuing a degree under either option are required to complete a comprehensive examination which tests the student’s knowledge in a field of concentration and in a minor field. To register for the exam, students must complete the Department comprehensive examination application by the posted deadline and meet with the Chair or Rome advisor.
