From a young age, alumnus Joseph Tully ’05L knew he wanted to
become a lawyer, and he knew that St. John’s School of Law was the
best bet to help him realize that dream.
“A
lot of the role models I had growing up were attorneys,” he
recalled. “I knew a handful of people who attended St. John’s, and
they spoke very highly of their experience – I could clearly see
the success that they all enjoyed. So when it came time for me to
apply to law schools, I was drawn to St. John’s.”
Tully currently serves as Senior Associate at Alston & Bird
LLP, working as a member of the firm’s Securities Litigation Group.
He focuses on general commercial litigation and government
investigations, and he attributes much of his success to what he
learned at St. John’s.
“From my experience, I’d say that St. John’s offers a practical
legal education, with a focus on real-world application rather than
pure theory,” he explained. “You learn the core skills that an
attorney needs to succeed, which gives you an advantage over your
peers. This especially holds true if you plan on practicing in New
York.”
Tully grew up in Brooklyn and is no stranger to Catholic
education. He attended St. Saviour Elementary School and later
graduated from Xavier High School.
“I was raised in Park Slope,” he noted, “before all the corner
stores and pizza parlors turned into cafes and French
restaurants.”
And though it’s been only seven years since his graduation from
St. John’s, this young alumnus knows how important it is to
financially support the University and give back whenever
possible.
“I know that my St. John's education is baked into whatever
success I enjoy in life,” he said. “That is why I contribute to St.
John's, because I value all that it offered to me and all it
continues to offer its students.”
