St. John’s University kicks off its celebration for Black
History Month 2013 this week with educational and interactive
displays highlighting St. John’s multicultural organizations on St.
John’s Queens and Staten Island campuses. The theme of this year’s
celebration is “At the Crossroads of Freedom and Equality: The
Emancipation Proclamation and the March on Washington,” in honor of
the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation as well as
the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington.
Throughout February students will be able to enjoy and
participate in various panel discussions, community service
projects, lectures and entertainment.
On Wednesday, January 30, the Black History Month Committee will be
hosting the “Freedom & Equity” program on the Queens campus.
St. John’s Sociology and Anthropology professor Roderick Bush,
Ph.D., and St. John’s History professors Lara Vapnek, Ph.D., and
Elizabeth Herbin-Triant, Ph.D., will be leading a discussion with
students on the history of the March on Washington, Jim Crow Laws,
and the Emancipation Proclamation. The program will take place at 7
p.m.
The Martin Luther King Luncheon on the Staten Island campus is
scheduled to take place on Thursday, February 7, in the Kelleher
Center at 1:50 p.m. The Annual Martin Luther King Dinner on the
Queens Campus will take place the same evening at 7 p.m. in
Marillac Terrace. Serving as this year’s Keynote Speakers are Dr.
Vincent LaVaughn Moss and Dr. Vance JoShaun Moss, who are twin
brothers, Lieutenant Colonels, Physicians and Humanitarians,
who have received national recognition for their work.
The Staten Island Campus will be hosting the Fourth Annual
Magnificat Gospel Choir Concert on Friday, February 15, at 7:30 p.m
in the Campus Center Gymnasium. Donations will be raised for the
Tunnel to Towers Foundation to help support Sandy Relief
victims.
The traditional end to the Black Heritage Celebration continues
this year with the annual Black and White Ball on Friday, February
22. This formal event held in the D’Angelo Center Ballroom at
7 p.m. is the grand finale of the Celebration and honors the
University’s student leaders and seniors.
