St. John’s expansive alumni network is exactly what Ezra Schulman was looking for

Ezra Schulman has wanted to be a lawyer since he was a kid. More specifically, he’s wanted to be a trial lawyer. Ezra has always been drawn to the idea of performing. As an undergraduate, he took a number of acting classes. So, a career as a trial attorney provides the perfect blend of opportunities to “perform,” while at the same time contributing something to society.

Originally from Queens, he decided that St. John’s would be the ideal fit for his legal education. One of the biggest factors in deciding on St. John’s was the collegial environment he knew he would encounter.

“The thing that really struck me when I first got here was I saw how much of a community there really is here. Although all the students are striving to be successful, they make sure to help each other out. From the first day I walked in here I was welcomed by everyone. That’s what I was looking for in a law school.”

It’s an environment that, Ezra says, is founded in networking and the ability to establish connections that will last a lifetime. He’s building a network—a network that will only grow in size and strength with each passing day.

Another key aspect to Ezra’s St. John’s experience has been the Polestino Trial Advocacy Institute. He has already participated in a national mock trial tournament in Sacramento, California, which gave him the opportunity to display his skills in a federal courtroom in front of a roomful of observers. He also attended a competition in Tampa, Florida, where he forged meaningful connections with fellow students from other schools, as well as respected attorneys.

“Through my participation with the Institute I’ve learned a great deal. I’ve learned how to get up and perform in front of people. But more importantly I’ve been able to learn how to think on my feet. In any trial you’re going to encounter things that weren’t expected.”

“A lot of people who come to St. John’s want to practice in New York, and that’s what they end up doing. On the other hand, many students want to live and practice in other places. So no matter where I end up, I know I’ll have connections just because of the network of alumni that St. John’s has. I feel confident that I’ll be able to go anywhere throughout the country and practice law.”
