Growing up in a family of union members, Andrea Andrade ’05C,
’06G, already a double graduate of St. John’s University, found her
calling as a labor advocate early in life.
“I have benefitted, throughout my entire life, from my parent’s
union memberships, so I always felt a calling to pursue a career
protecting workers' rights,” says the second-year School of Law
student. “I believe it’s important for people to understand that
unions not only support individual workers but also their entire
families.”
Returning for her third St. John’s degree, Andrea says it was the
unyielding support of the faculty and administration that convinced
her to pursue her legal education at St. John’s.
“My interest in defending workers’ rights greatly increased after I
took Professor David Gregory’s labor law course,” she noted. “He
taught me precisely how to apply my passion for promoting worker’s
rights to the field of law.”
With a commitment to her studies and the help of one of her
professors, Andrea won a prestigious
Peggy Browning Fellowship. She will work this summer as a
fellow in the General Counsel's office of Teamsters in Washington
D.C.
“During my earlier years at St. John’s, I had so many great
experiences with professors that took a special interest in my
success that it was second nature to apply to St. John’s School of
Law. I assumed that I would find the same support system at the law
school that I had as an undergraduate – and my assumption proved
correct!”
