Professor Rosemary Salomone continues to be impressed with the quality and generosity of her students

Professor Rosemary Salomone has served in a number of roles at St. John’s School of Law. She’s been the associate academic dean, she’s been director of the Center for Law and Public Policy, and she contributes to the law school in a number of ways beyond teaching and administrative duties.

Prior to joining St. John’s in the mid ’80s, Professor Salomone was a faculty member at Harvard University in the graduate education program. And she has served as a trustee of the State University of New York. Still, regardless of where she’s been or where she sees herself in the future, she will always be highly impressed with her students at St. John’s.

“The students who come to St. John’s are very keen of intellect, very hardworking, very generous of spirit, and that’s what has struck me in my many years of teaching here. The law school experience can be very competitive and daunting, particularly for first-year students. And yet our students are very eager to share their experiences, share their notes, help each other, and study together.”

While St. John’s has a national reputation for delivering top-notch practical skills, Professor Salomone stresses that the school also delivers a strong intellectual and scholarly component.

“This law school has a very rich history of educating lawyers. For the faculty, teaching is our primary responsibility. We take that very seriously. That being said, there’s a very strong intellectual and scholarly component. We provide numerous opportunities for students to share in our research. We host symposia and conferences and brown-bag lunches.”

And while there are many opportunities for students to engage in the intellectual life of a lawyer, at the heart of the St. John’s mission, Professor Salomone says, is the idea of service, community, and values.

“The value component is very important to us. It’s very much a part of our mission here.”
