Consumer Day 2008: Protecting Your
Financial Future
On Saturday, June 7, 2008, the
Securities Arbitration Clinic and the
Elder Law Clinic at St. John's School of Law sponsored the
second annual free all day seminar to the community entitled
“Consumer Day 2008: Protecting Your Financial Future”.
The event was held in the Belson Moot Court Room at the Law School
and was co-sponsored by the New York State Attorney General’s
Office.

The purpose of the seminar was to inform members of the
community about ways to protect themselves from investment scams
such as “free-lunch” seminars and provide tips for wise
investing. Additional topics included variable annuities and
the current sub-prime mortgage crisis and dealing with the
situation.
The guest speakers included Professor
Lisa Catalano, the Director of the Securities Arbitration
Clinic, Professor Christine Lazaro, the Supervising Attorney of the
Securities Arbitration Clinic, Elizabeth Block from the New York
State Attorney General’s Office, Stephen Clarson from the
Securities & Exchange Commission, Andrew Kampel from the
Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), Seth Lipner of the
law firm Deutsch & Lipner and Christopher Brown (’92) of the
firm Bergos Horgan & Brown LLP.
The seminar drew great interest from the more than 50 audience
participants who expressed an interest in future seminars of this
nature.
